How Does a Winter Clothing Drive Work?

Winter clothing drives are essentially the same as any other clothing drive, but they are geared toward winter clothing specifically. Your organization will host the event, and supporters and other interested individuals will donate any clothing items or other items that they no longer need.

Winter items you can accept for your clothing drive include:

  • Sweaters
  • Jackets
  • Coats
  • Socks
  • Boots
  • Hats
  • Gloves
  • Scarves

To increase the impact of your event, you can also choose to accept in-kind donations that are essential to those in need but aren’t winter clothing. These items can be:

  • Underwear
  • Bras
  • Shirts
  • Pants
  • Jeans

You can also accept non-clothing items, such as:

  • Soap
  • Deodorant
  • Lotion
  • Fingernail clippers
  • Toothbrushes
  • Toothpaste
  • Baby wipes
  • Diapers
  • Kleenex

Your staff members and volunteers will sort through these items and then donate them to an organization that will distribute them to those in need.

How to Fundraise with a Winter Clothing Drive

Some individuals will want to support your cause, but may not have any items to donate. Other individuals may simply want to support in every way they can. To leverage their giving spirit, ask them to make monetary donations. To help encourage these gifts, inform donors of the tangible impact of their donation. For example, if someone makes a donation of $20, tell them that their money will be used to purchase a hat for an individual who needs it.

What are the Benefits of a Winter Clothing Drive?

1. Help individuals in need.

People from all walks of life can benefit from a helping hand. Donations can not only help people experiencing homelessness or poverty, but they can also help individuals who are suffering from illnesses or diseases. For example, the American Kidney Service accepts donations of winter clothing. They state, “Some families find themselves having to choose between dialysis and essentials, like electricity, and that’s an extremely difficult place to be in life.” Organizations such as these aim to alleviate the strain on individuals and families.

By hosting a winter clothing drive, you’ll be enabling these organizations to fulfill their mission and help out as many people as possible.

2. Environmentally friendly.

The United States alone generates over 17 million tons of textile waste annually, with over 66% of unwanted clothes and textiles sent to landfills. While a single winter clothing drive won’t offset all this waste, it’s a step in the right direction toward an increasingly sustainable and environmentally friendly world. Instead of discarding their used clothing, your supporters will be able to donate them and give them new life with a new owner.

3. A cleaner home.

No one likes a cluttered home, and a winter clothing drive is a perfect excuse for your supporters to sort through their possessions and determine what they no longer want. It’s a guilt-free way for them to get rid of clothing they don’t wear anymore, and they won’t even have to worry about disposal, as your organization will take care of that for them.
