How Text-to-Give Works

For both nonprofits and donors, there are several steps that need to be followed in order to set up text-to-give and successfully submit donations: 

    1. Set up text-to-give with a software provider. Find a text-to-give platform that has the features your nonprofit needs while keeping your donors’ information secure.
    2. Receive a unique number or shortcode. Your software provider will give your organization a number that donors can text. You’ll need to select a keyword so that your provider knows that those donations are for your specific text-to-give campaign and not for another organization or campaign.
    3. Promote your campaign. Once you’re set up, you’ll need to promote your text-to-give campaign to donors. Share your organization’s number and keyword on different channels to reach all of your donors.
    4. Have donors text the nonprofit’s phone number. Donors will text the pre-selected keyword to your organization’s phone number. If you pick more intuitive and advanced software, it will still accept the donation even if there’s a typo.
    5. Follow the link. Within a few seconds, your donor will receive a confirmation text with a link. They will need to click it and select their preferred donation amount. First-time donors will need to fill out a short donation form with their payment information. 
    6. Press send to donate! Clicking on “donate” in the text message will take your donors to a pre-written email or message that authenticates the transaction. Once they click “send,” their donation will be submitted.
